  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups raw oats
  • ½ cup chopped mixed nuts
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup water
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Beat the brown sugar, white sugar, nuts, shortening, buttermilk, water, vanilla, egg and cinnamon.
  3. Add the other ingredients and blend well.
  4. Drop rounded teaspoons of the batter on to a pair of greased cookie sheets and bake for 12 minutes or until the cookies are firm and golden brown.
  5. Let them cool on a wire rack.
